McIlroy, who has won four majors and is currently ranked No. 3, told No Laying Up he accepted an invitation to play with the president at Trump International Golf Club in Palm Beach, Florida, despite recovering from a stress fracture in his rib.
A picture posted Saturday of him on the links with Trump, ClearSports CEO Garry Singer and former New York Yankees star Paul O’Neill made the rounds, but Mclroy told No Laying Up that O’Neill and Singer were not part of the Sunday’s foursome.
McIlroy called the commander-in-chief a “decent player for a guy in his 70s,” but the Internet was not all compliments about the golf star associating with the controversial chief executive. To some Twitter users, McIlroy had dug a hole for himself.
I was a massive fan of Rory McIlroy but after hearing he played a round of golf with Trump at the weekend, no more. Bad move, Rory!

I’m sure there’s a reasonable explanation for Rory McIlroy’s round of golf. #Trump was probably asking him how to improve his lie.

Just when you thought it was impossible to dislike Rory McIlroy more, off he goes playing golf with Trump.

Rory McIlroy “Playing in the Olympics is too political”

In all fairness, McIlroy did get some support too.
