(Reuters) – A look at the records of Romania’s Simona Halep and Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic before their first-round match at the French Open on Tuesday (prefix number denotes seeding):
WTA Ranking: 3 (Highest ranking: 1)
Grand Slam titles: 1 (French Open 2018)
2018 French Open performance: Winner
Best French Open performance: Winner (2018)
Halep faced difficult questions about her mentality before winning a maiden Grand Slam title at Roland Garros last year, but the Romanian is more relaxed this time with the weight of expectation off her shoulders.
She arrives on the back of a second round defeat at the Italian Open, but will count on the form that took her to the Madrid final this month to have another deep run in Paris.
WTA Ranking: 47 (Highest ranking: 39)
Grand Slam titles: 0
2018 French Open performance: first round
Best French Open performance: Fourth round (2014)
Tomljanovic will be well aware that she may not get a better chance to topple Halep, with the world number three not enjoying the best preparation for her title defense.
The Australian, who has struggled to live up to her promise since reaching the fourth round in Paris five years ago, has the weapons to trouble Halep having dragged her to three sets in Cincinnati last year.
2018 Halep d Tomljanovic 4-6 6-3 6-3 (Cincinnati, hard)
